Founded in 1936 by the Albany Institute of History & Art, the Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region Juried Exhibition highlights some of the most significant contemporary art being made by artists living within a one hundred mile radius of the Capital Region.

The Mohawk Hudson Region Juried Exhibition is among the longest running consecutive regionals in the nation. Since 1971, the Regional has rotated amongst the University Art Museum, the Albany Institute of History & Art and the Schenectady Museum. The Mohawk Hudson Region Juried Exhibition is supported annually by the area business community. Each year, area businesses contribute cash awards and all three participating museums make purchases for their collections. Two regional galleries--Albany Center Galleries and Artforms Gallery--will each award a one-person exhibition to the artist of their choice. This year the University Art Museum received entries from over 150 regional artists. The final juried selection includes approximately 120 works by 42 artists. A variety of mediums are represented including video, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and installation.

The juror for this year's Mohawk Hudson Regional is internationally acclaimed artist, Xu Bing. Xu Bing is a recipient of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship Genius Award. In 1996, Xu Bing exhibited his seminal installation, "A Book from the Sky" at the University Art Museum. Combining the intricacies of ancient Chinese printmaking and calligraphy with the rigors of contemporary conceptual art practice, Xu Bing's work is an ongoing reflection on the complexities of bridging culture, language, and meaning. Xu Bing received a Master of Fine Arts in 1987 from Beijing Central Academy of Fine Art. Since emigrating to the United States in 1990, he has had solo exhibitions in all corners of the world including China, Japan, Australia, Africa, Europe, Finland, Canada and the United States.
