Before I was a painter, I took pictures. Sociable but shy, I use my camera to make friends, and to take what I want from the visual world. In carefully edited albums, I am a grateful collector of lost moments.

Painting from my photographs allows me to look very hard – to stare – at what I have tried to save. I work quickly, eager to understand the color cues that signal the presence of a human being.
