Jon
Rubin lives and works
in San Francisco. His scrupulously detailed drawings of 1970s
suburbia depict remembered interiors of his friends’ houses.
These densely constructed,
totally off-kilter images lay bare all the trappings of the Good Life.
Stone fireplaces,
sectional sofas, potted plants,Oriental carpets, and neatly arranged
end tables
abound. Drawn with a compressed, agitated line, the primly contained
sites of ill-fated
beer bashes and other home-alone antics are both less and more than
the sum of their parts. While Rubin approaches his subjects with a
celebratory eye for the
nuances of material comforts, the ruptured manner in which these things
spill across
the page suggests a darker, less cozy side to growing up on the right
side of the tracks.

Born 1963 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lives in Oakland,
California.
